Group therapy can take many forms. Some groups are structured around shared identity or lived experience, such as culture, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity. These groups often focus on exploring common challenges and stressors within a supportive, peer-informed environment.

Other groups are centered around specific treatment goals. These may include areas such as addiction recovery, trauma, bipolar disorder, or experiences of domestic or sexual violence. These groups tend to be more clinically focused, with structured guidance, reflection, and skill development.

A third category is psychoeducational groups. These groups are more focused on learning and skill-building, and may include topics such as mental health education, parenting skills, or recovery strategies. While they may overlap with other group types, their primary focus is on providing information and practical tools that can be applied in daily life.
